Holiday Travel Checklist: More Time Together, Less Time in Transit
Plan Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year travel around the moments that matter, with a flight, stay, packing, and arrival checklist.

The best part of a holiday trip might be the first evening around the table, a quiet morning away, or seeing someone you have missed. Start there. Decide which moments you want to protect, then arrange the travel around them.
Choose the moment you cannot miss
Write down the gathering or reservation that matters most. Work backward from it, allowing for the journey from the airport and time to settle in. If you have flexibility, compare arriving the previous day with arriving on the day itself. The extra night has a cost, but so does losing the evening to a tight connection.
There is no universal cheapest holiday departure day. Search the dates you can actually use and compare the whole trip, including bags, seats, transfers, and any extra accommodation. Our flight comparison guide gives you a consistent checklist.
Agree on the details before anyone books
For a family visit, confirm who is staying where, who needs a pickup, and whether the return journey overlaps with other commitments. Put arrival times in the destination’s local time. One shared note with booking references and contact details is easier to use than a long thread of screenshots.
If you are staying separately, choose a hotel that makes the visits easy. Compare the route to your host as carefully as the nightly rate. Check hotel options and booking terms, especially reception hours for a late arrival.
Pack for the journey you actually have
Keep the first evening’s essentials accessible so a delayed suitcase does not leave you searching for basics. Leave space for anything you expect to bring home. Before packing gifts, food, or unusual items, check the departure airport’s official security guidance and your airline’s baggage rules for the specific item.
Make a small departure list: documents, booking confirmations, charging cable, essential personal items, and the address you need on arrival. Check it before leaving home rather than at the terminal.
Leave one part of the trip unbooked
A free afternoon can absorb an arrival change or become the most enjoyable part of the visit. Avoid making every meal a reservation. If you want a festive outing, choose one activity everyone will enjoy and check its cancellation conditions.
Before departure, review flight status, local conditions, and the provider’s contact process. Keep your host informed if plans change. For a smaller holiday escape, try our festive weekend planning guide.
